The variety that they present to someone who begins to take interest in Buddhism for the first time can be very confusing. How can schools so different form one another such as Zen, Jodo Shin, Nicheren and Tibetan Buddhism all belong to one single tradition? It can be difficult to distinguish between what is the essence of Buddhism (Dhamma or Dharma) and what are simply cultural traditions. The aim of the Friends of the Western Buddhist Order (FWBO) is to seek out the core of the Buddhas teaching that is found in all the traditions and present within the modern Western context.
